Chiropractic Care
If you follow this blog regularly, then it is no surprise to you that I value a holistic approach when it comes to overall health and wellness, especially for my kids. We have discussed the topics of supplements (especially for picky eaters) and the integrative doctors who have helped our boys tremendously. Another form of full-body wellness that we subscribe to is regular chiropractic adjustments.
I am no a stranger to chiropractic care as during my childhood my mother would take my brother for scheduled adjustments. I would sometimes get adjusted myself when something was bothering me and I could see the positive impact it would have, especially as I got older and was more active in sports. I found that chiropractic adjustments were a great way to help my body feel its best. I even started getting adjustments in high school before track meets because I honestly performed better after being adjusted. I knew taking my boys to the chiropractor would be a good idea, and I was reminded of that from time to time when other families would talk about their success with visits. It took us a few years to make the push into getting our children seen regularly. I blame busy schedules more than anything else. But two years ago, I finally took the step to have chiropractic care written into our schedule.
I was worried about how the first visit with my boys would go. Even though they are not so little anymore, I didn’t expect them to handle the sensory aspects that come with chiropractic adjustments very well. However, to my surprise, it went better than I thought. All of my kids were able to do the entire adjustment, including the “neck crack,” which always ends our sessions. And their ability to sit through the sessions was far from the best part. The real prize was seeing how they acted after the adjustments.
Like most care we try, it is not a cure, but the results are noticeable. It almost seems like they are going in once a month for an “attitude” adjustment if you will. They seem a little calmer, a little more focused, and just overall more content versions of themselves. Which of course to me is well worth making time for these visits.
The theory behind chiropractic care and its potential impact on autism makes a lot of sense to me. I have personally witnessed the significant improvements in our boys on the spectrum through healing the gut, which has reinforced my belief in the gut-brain connection. So, it’s easy for me to believe that adjusting or correcting misalignments in the spinal cord and nervous system can lead to improved overall health.
I understand that some people may be skeptical of chiropractic and holistic care solutions, but I have personally witnessed the positive changes in my boys, so I believe that these treatments are well worth the time and investment. Trying out non-invasive treatments like chiropractic care doesn’t entail a significant risk, and if you are unfamiliar with it or have never considered it for your children with autism, now is a good time to explore it. For those in our area, I highly recommend Dr. Huffer at Liberty Chiropractic in West Liberty, Ohio. He has been great with our family, and our boys eagerly anticipate their monthly chiropractic visits. They even argue over who gets adjusted first!
